Cyprus Golf Resorts
CYPRUS is the new jewel in the crown for golfers seeking golfing
breaks in the warmth of the eastern Mediterranean. It offers golfers
challenging world class championship courses, top quality hotels, safety,
warm hospitality and almost year round sunshine.
There are presently two golf courses to choose from: Tsada Golf Club
and Secret Valley Golf Club.
Tsada Golf Club The TSADA GOLF CLUB, the first grass course to be built in Cyprus,
was completed in April 1994.
Located just 20 minutes from Paphos Town, on an elevated position
550 metres above sea level, ensures cool breezes during the summer
months.
Historically, it has been part of the monastery of Stavros tis Minthis,
which gives an air of timelessness and romance. From the 7th tee often
a monk may be seen in the garden of the monastery. The 18 hole course,
designed by Donald Steel, in two loops of nine, reveal the subtle hand
of a man who always allows a course to blend into its natural surroundings.
It plays to a par 72 and measures 6060 metres, a fine test for players
of all abilities.
The fairways most of which have uphill, downhill or side hill slopes
are lined with fruit trees and grape vines. Undulating greens are not
always easy to reach but do have perfect putting surfaces.
The 14th is a par 3 and the most challenging short hole, played from
an elevated tee across a ravine to a green cleverly set on the side
of the hill.
The 17th (par 5) is 533 metres and has a winding fairway crossing
three unforgiving streams.
The clubhouse facilities include a restaurant, bar, ladies and gents
changing rooms with showers, outdoor swimming pool, tennis court, a
driving range, putting green, pitching and chipping area.
The Pro-shop offers clients an array of golfing accessories, a boutique,
electrically powered Golf Carts and trolleys. A P.G.A. professional
offers tuition and guidance
Secret Valley Golf Club
The SECRET VALLEY GOLF CLUB, designed by Iacovos Iacovou, who also
constructed the Tsada Golf Club, started operation in September 1996.
Located 18 km east of Paphos and 49 km from Limassol, near “Petra
tou Romiou” the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, the Goddess
of Love.
It lies in a scenic valley with grand trees adding maturity to the
fairly new course. The sty kingly colourful natural rock formations
offer panoramic views to the golfer. It plays to a par 71 and measures
5904 metres.
Secret Valley promises players both the beauty of nature and the pleasure
of golf.
“ The views of the surroundings combined with the design efforts
will create a truly unique and memorable golfing experience “ ,
says Mr Stelios Patsalides General Manager, who also manages the Tsada
Golf Club under the umbrella of Cyprus Golf Resorts.
The front nine offer four nice holes for warming up, two birdie opportunities
and an easy dog leg (if you know how!). The first and third holes -
par 4’s 375 and 335 metres respectively - feature sand traps
halfway between the tee and the green. A good drive or a really bad
one will keep a player out of trouble. The second hole is a straight,
comfortable par three. Number 4 at 120 metres has birdie written all
over it, with a tricky bunker at the front edge of the green which
requires accuracy.
The back nine, plays longer than the first nine and the challenge
starts immediately - no warm-up holes on this side. A long par 5 475
metres with sand traps in the middle make the tenth hole demanding.
Hole 13 is a big hitter’s nightmare - a short 145metres with
water in the back (winter only). Overshoot the green and you are out
of bounds: Underplay it from the tee and bear the embarrassment of
not making the green in one. The eighteenth par 5 515 metres finishes
at the clubhouse with what appears a selection of artificial lakes
on the back side of the green.
Practice facilities include putting greens, chipping areas, fairway
bunkers and a large driving range. Tuition can be tailored to suit
individual requirements and teaching can be on an individual or group
basis.
The clubhouse at Secret Valley as the one at Tsada, has a wooden interior
and facilities including a fully stocked Pro-shop, locker rooms, bar
and restaurant with verandas overlooking the artificial lakes and the
golf course.
Down town in Paphos, visitors can explore the city day or night with
safety. A myriad of restaurants and bars will keep even the most ardent
night owl occupied.
